Art Enhancement Programme

As part of our commitment to providing a high-quality and ambitious art curriculum, Castletown Primary is proud to be a selected partner school working in collaboration with Northumbria University and The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead. This innovative Art Enhancement Programme reflects our dedication to enriching pupils’ artistic experiences and developing creativity across the school.

The programme has evolved year on year and provides a valuable collaborative partnership between higher education, professional arts organisations and schools with a strong creative ethos. Through this initiative, university students work alongside identified groups of pupils, delivering bespoke art projects designed to enhance artistic skills, creative thinking and self-expression.

Drawing upon specialist training, gallery-based learning experiences and contemporary artistic practice, the students plan and deliver a sequence of high-quality art sessions that inspire and challenge pupils. These sessions encourage children to explore a range of techniques, materials and artistic concepts, while developing confidence, resilience and critical thinking skills.

A key feature of the project is the celebration of pupils’ achievements through exhibitions, displays and whole-school assemblies, providing authentic opportunities for children to showcase their work and reflect on their creative journeys.

Castletown Primary School is currently in its third year of collaboration with Northumbria University. This sustained partnership has significantly enhanced our art provision, providing pupils with enriching experiences that deepen their understanding of the visual arts, raise aspirations and foster a lifelong appreciation of creativity.

Religious Education (R.E.)

Although there is not a National Curriculum for RE, all maintained schools must follow the National Curriculum requirements to teach a broad and balanced curriculum, which includes RE. All maintained schools therefore have a statutory duty to teach RE.

The RE curriculum is determined by the local Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE), which is responsible for producing the locally agreed syllabus for RE. Agreed Syllabuses used in schools (maintained or academy), which are not designated with a religious character must ‘reflect the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain’.  All schools must recognise diverse religions and systems of belief in the UK both locally and nationally.'

At Castletown Primary, we follow the agreed Sunderland City Council syllabus. Click here for full details.

Parents and carers have the right to withdraw your child from all or part of Religious Education (R.E.). Please speak to Mr Duncan if you have any queries or concerns.
