Careers
At Castletown Primary School, we are committed to inspiring ambition and broadening horizons for all our pupils from EYFS through to Year 6. Through engaging activities, real-world experiences and meaningful encounters with a wide range of professions, we ensure that children develop an early understanding of the diverse career pathways available to them.
Our approach is rooted in raising aspirations, challenging stereotypes and fostering curiosity about the world of work. By embedding career-related learning across the curriculum and providing opportunities to meet visitors, explore workplaces and take part in hands-on experiences, we equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to envision their future possibilities. This progressive exposure ensures every child, regardless of background, is empowered to dream big and recognise their potential.
Northumbrian Water
We were delighted to welcome visitors from Northumbrian Water, who delivered an engaging and inspiring session for our Year 6 pupils. The visit helped children to explore the wide range of careers and pathways within the water industry, with a particular focus on promoting the role of women in STEM. The day was informative, practical and great fun, with pupils taking part in a range of hands-on investigations. They created their own lava lamps, filtered water collected from Hylton Dene and even made underwater volcanoes! A huge thank you to Victoria, Hayley, Sophie and Charlotte for such an absolutely amazing experience.

A Day in the Life of a TV News Presenter |
We were delighted to welcome Amy Lea from Tyne Tees Television, who visited our school to speak with Year 6 pupils about her career in journalism.
During her engaging session, Amy provided valuable insight into the world of journalism, including:
- An overview of what journalism is and the various forms it can take
- The range of roles involved in producing a television news programme
- Pathways into the profession, including recommended subjects to study
- Her personal experiences as a journalist, including the aspects she enjoys most and the most memorable news report she has covered
The session sparked excellent discussion, and pupils were enthusiastic in asking thoughtful questions.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Amy for giving her time to inspire our students. It was a pleasure to have her visit our school.
Northumbria University - STEM
Maths in the Real World!
Year 5 had an exciting visit from a special guest at Northumbria University, who opened our eyes to the amazing world of maths beyond the classroom! During this inspiring session, we discovered how maths is used in a huge variety of careers—from science and engineering to sports and storytelling. We were amazed to see just how important our maths skills really are!
The fun didn’t stop there… we also became mathematicians in the world of books! From measuring potion ingredients inspired by George’s Marvellous Medicine to calculating Quidditch scores from Harry Potter, we tackled a range of creative challenges that brought maths to life.
Year 5 showed fantastic enthusiasm and impressive maths knowledge throughout the session. It was wonderful to see such curiosity, teamwork and problem-solving in action. Who knows… we may have some future mathematicians in the making!
Mini Police - Northumbria Police
Some of our Year 5 pupils work with Northumbria Police as part of the 'Mini Police' scheme. They have their own uniform and support the police a key events, such as Remembrance Day and the Sunderland Runs event.
